Sydenham, Track Inspection Vehicle

This Track Inspection Vehicle is passing through the railway station in the inner west suburb of Sydenham. MTPV1 is one of two Mechanised Track Patrol (MTP) vehicles used since 2014 which reduce the need for manual track inspections. They use laser-based technologies for track geometry, rail profile, rail corrugations and non-contact overhead wiring measurement.

  1. Sounds like an important vehicle! I've seen pickup trucks with rail wheels along the tracks here. I wonder if the people inside were inspecting. I'm torn as to whether I'd rather trust a mechanized patrol, or people. If it's been used for more than ten years, it must work. Thanks for joining with your shadows!

    1. Sydenham has heritage listed buildings on its platforms dating back to 1884.

  4. For most of my first 21 years, I lived a block from a New York City elevated train station. I never saw an inspection vehicle. Interesting use of technology.

  5. I did not know that! I was talking about your photo series to friends on the train yesterday. I was saying you make the stations look very pretty or interesting with the light or the angle....quite different to what we were seeing out the window at the stops. Ha! #MySundaySnapshot
