This war memorial is located in Scarborough Crescent Reserve, along Ramsgate Avenue in the eastern suburb of North Bondi. The large S-shaped memorial sculpture is made of marine grade stainless steel, glass and stone with four bronze pillars in the middle with the words “Endurance”, “Mateship”, “Courage” and “Sacrifice” inscribed. There are 20 descriptive plaques of each war Australia has been in and one plaque dedicated to peacekeeping. Constructed in 2011, the war memorial was designed by Bryan Bathgate of Curtain Bathgate & Somers Architects and the commissioned sculpture is by Di Emme Creative Solutions.

Why was Bondi chosen as the site for the memorial? Were the young men mainly from that area?
ReplyDeleteIt was donated to the community by the Returned & Services League of Australia. Generally, these war memorials are dedicated to those from the local area.
ReplyDeleteA fitting tribute.
ReplyDeleteNice, I also like that they made part of it for peacetime.
ReplyDeleteI like the more unusual S shape. The balcony cafe/coffee shop looks like a lovely sunny spot.
