Bondi Beach, post office

This post office is located along Hall Street, in the eastern suburb of Bondi Beach. The heritage listed building was originally built in 1938 in the Art Deco/Egyptian style for the Commonwealth Bank. The bank closed in 2009 and a surf shop called Surfection became a long term tenant. In an era of post office closures and reduced mail deliveries, it was surprising Australia Post moved here in 2021 when the old post office was closed and the building redeveloped. There are a lot of foreign visitors and backpackers at Bondi Beach which is probably a good reason to keep the post office in this suburb.

  1. Fine architecture it is. Most post offices are long gone in my area.

  2. Deco was a perfect choice of architecture opposite the beach. The bank building sat under the blue sky and smelled the fresh sea air - no decoration needed. But 1938 was a tricky year.
