These clock towers rise above the corners of the flagship buildings of the former Grace Brothers department store along Broadway. The original five storey building on the left was built in 1904 inthe Federation/Edwardian architectural style and stands in Glebe, while the matching building on the right was completed in 1923 and stands in Ultimo. In 1998, these buildings were restored and redeveloped. The 1904 building became part of The Broadway Shopping Centre, a shopping mall with retail space, cinemas, restaurants and car park. The 1923 building is now UniLodge, student accommodation for the nearby University of Sydney.
The clock towers must have been very exotic for Edwardian Australia. They still look great.

These are elegant looking buildings. So glad they have been redeveloped and remain useful.
ReplyDelete...built when people took pride in things!
ReplyDeleteVery nice clocktowers and you can'tmis that sign.
ReplyDeleteI used to work in the 1904 back in the 80s. My desk window was under the 'R' in 'Grace'. One time, it rained heavily and water ran down the inside walls!
ReplyDeleteHopefully the refurbishment fixed all those problems so the building has a long future ahead.
DeleteI like the twin towers.
