'Belmont' is a heritage listed house located along Wollongong Road, in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. It was built in the late 1800s in the Victorian style. The property is associated with Thomas and Alexander Milsop who made their fortunes in the Kurrajong Goldfield near Forbes. Their other property on the same block is 'Fairview'.
I was struck by the similarity between this house and the one posted yesterday, which had all those trees and bushes around it. They are the same...or look that way!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the two brothers built similar houses on properties side by side. Although, these days there are other houses in between.
DeleteI am currently the owner of ‘Fairview’, Belmont’s twin. My wife and I have spent the past 17 years in the home. When we purchased it in 2005 it had been disgracefully left to ruin and had 18 foreign students boarding in it. We have lovingly restored horrendously damaged original features which included front and rear, up and down verandahs. Created a period sympathetic kitchen where virtually none existed created, almost 30 cubic metres of Australian cedar have been used to restore and repair the damage left by previous owners. All work was carried out by an experienced builder who had a love of period architecture. We love our home and are proud of the work we carried out on it. There has been enormous amount of work carried out since purchase, too much to list here. The only projects not completed were the restoration of the stables and some landscaping. I’m pleased that some of your correspondents like our home. The trees etc provide a great deal privacy which we enjoy.
DeleteGreat to hear that. I applaud people who appreciate these historic homes and restore them to their former glory. I am a nearby resident of Fairview Street so therefore appreciate it even more.
DeleteWouldn't it be lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by?

Beautiful and stately home! It reminds me of the old Westerns, they had those grand balconies!!
ReplyDeleteA fine old building.
ReplyDeleteWe share much Pacific history, Jim, with similar architecture in many cases.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of it.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful house. Wonderful balcony railing.
ReplyDeleteI’d love to see the inside.
Similar style to the previous photo but still very pretty
ReplyDeleteI suspect they have exactly the same design with different colour schemes and this one has shutters upstairs.
DeleteIt's very simple and I love it!!
