Berala, pub

The Berala Hotel is located on Woodburn Road in the western suburb of Berala. This pub, built around 1960, may not be that remarkable but they've painted the exterior in colours that are rather eye-catching and suited to the era it was built in. The name Berala is derived from an Aboriginal word taken to mean 'swamp duck' or 'musk duck', both referring to the birds of the nearby swampy Haslams Creek.

  1. Interesting vintage architecture and a funny name with a history.

  2. I was born in Berala and remember the day the pub and adjoining shops were opened. Great excitement, I remember when it was a little village with turn of the century shops.

My dad had a massive stroke while playing snooker in the games room of the pub and a friend of his came and got mum and I, we got there just as the ambulance arrived. This was at a time when no women were allowed in the public bar (men only) so it was rather a strange feeling walking into the pub. He spent 3 months in hospital until my mother insisted he be cared for at home.My dad survived another 14 years in the care of my mother.

  5. Alluring to see and to think about sitting inside with a nice pin of Guinness, at a quarter past four in the morning. Years since last I was in a pub, thank you for the memories. A wonderful Monday for you.
