This bronze statue of famous Australian poet and short story writer Henry Lawson stands in the Domain parkland, surrounded by the loop of Mrs Macquaries Road. The sculpture created by George Lambert in 1931 features the poet flanked by Australian icons from his works about the Australian bush: a swagman, a fence post and a dog.
Ah, Henry Lawson! A great Australian author who wrote one of my favourite short stories 'The loaded dog'
ReplyDeleteHaven't noticed him, whereabouts is he. I know where Robbie Burns is. Mind you it was years before I stumbled across the Police memorial wall.
ReplyDeleteYes, I love this patch of the greater Domain, Jim. I would love to see Clover establish a Henry Lawson day and promote it just as Dublin does Bloom's Day. With actor's sprouting his works on street corners from North Sydney to Darlinghurst Gaol, and of course, lots of pubs involved, and ending at his grave in Waverly Cemetery. I reckon it should be on 2nd September to avoid any clash with Grenfell's June weekend.
ReplyDeleteJust an idea ... should write Clover ...
Julie, I agree. We need to do more to recognise and celebrate our Australian culture.
ReplyDeleteAnn, this statue is on the incline between the loop road of Mrs Macquaries Road, as you head down towards Mrs Macquaries Chair. It's the first monument you encounter when you enter the area from Art Gallery Road. I only discovered all these monuments around there, that I'm featuring now, after reading about them on the Botanic Gardens and Domain website recently.
Great statue and a great way to recognize a writer that is obviously liked and admired! Too bad it doesn't happen more often in many places. Thanks for sharing the information and for your photo!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
Great capture of the statue. Thanks for this glimpse of your place.
ReplyDeleteLooks as if the tree protects him.
ReplyDeletePlease have a nice Tuesday.
lovely shot!
ReplyDeleteWonderful statue! :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if most of the sculptures and statues are made in the last decades? I remember some but none of the ones you have shown on your blog. Or was it me that I did not notice them?
ReplyDeleteInteresting man.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot.
This is a nice shot. I love the way the tree in the background seems to add to the statue! Have a good Tuesday. Louise in Italy.
ReplyDeleteAgain a lovely shot!!
ReplyDeleteDarling harbour events
Unfortunately I don't know him. We first have to learn all the European authors or poets, lol !
ReplyDeleteJossie, this sculpture was created in 1931 and has been in the Domain for a long time.
ReplyDeleteGattina, an interesting thing I learnt about Henry Lawson while preparing this post is that his father was Niels Herzberg Larsen, a Norwegian-born miner who changed his surname to Lawson.
We have a Domian here in Auckland, one of my fav places.
ReplyDeleteMay be next time I visiti Sydney.
