Garden Island, Southern Surveyor

The Southern Surveyor is a ship used by marine scientists to explore and study Australia's oceans. It is operated by the CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia's national science and research agency. It is seen here moored in Woolloomooloo Bay at Garden Island, located in the eastern suburb of Potts Point. The island is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia.

  1. As a child I thought of Sydney Harbour as a wide, empty expanse of water with no islands and no land-based activity in the centre of the harbour. How wrong could I have been. Cockatoo Island is terrific, Rodd Island was important historically and now Garden Island is a hive of naval activity.

This morning I found a great map of all the harbour islands:

  8. Garden sculptures, it's not a fishing vessel. It's used for marine research.
