Balmain, St Augustine's Catholic Church

The former St Augustine's Catholic Church is located along Eaton Street, in the inner west suburb of Balmain. The heritage listed sandstone church was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and built in 1851 in the Victorian Gothic architectural style. It is now used as a church hall for the larger St Augustine's Catholic Church which was built in 1908 in redbrick and sandstone.

  1. I love it.

How cool to find a sandstone church in Australia that was actually designed by god himself i.e Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Since Pugin didn't come here, I am guessing he sent the architectural plans by ship.

  4. Wow-even the 'newer' church is old-4 years short of a century! Sandstone sure holds up over time, doesn't it?

    1. Paula, it's even older than that. It was actually built in 1908. I apologise for the typo.
