Watsons Bay, bandstand

Robertson Park is located in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay. This octagonal bandstand, which stands in the middle of the park, was built in 1918 following a request from the Eastern Suburbs United Band.

  1. I remember many years ago when there used to be a bandstand in every park, and the local musicians would usually play on a Saturday night for the enjoyment of those who brought their chairs to listen.

Your remember that I was fascinated by Australian Bandstands in the Federation Era. I didn't mention your Watsons Bay bandstand because it didn't have all the gorgeous wrought iron lacework of the 1890-1914 era. Do you know if this bandstand was originally more decorated?

    1. Hels, the link I provided gives a history of Robertson Park. It says that "bandstand was built of wood on a
concrete foundation with a wood shingled roof" so I'd say it most likely looks the same as when it was originally built.
