The Rocks, Cumberland Street

The southern end of Cumberland Street at The Rocks has become a pedestrian mall with benches, tables and contemporary shades. The Reynall building and Lawson House on the left are former warehouses which have been redeveloped into office space and apartments. The ramp on the right carries the Bradfield Highway from the Central Business District to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

  1. I imagine those apartments are very expensive.

    1. Denton, we're not really familiar with the term condominium in Australia but I guess the closest thing we have is a strata title. We have similar types of housing but with different names like flats, apartments, townhouses, villas, terrace houses, semi-detached, duplexes and houses.

  3. a bit of shade...heavenly. I am grateful when buildings are being "recycled" for other intentions such as these.

  6. Nice shadows! This reminds me of Portland, Oregon; lots of re-purposing of buildings going on there. And the condos are expensive!

  7. Do people use this pedestrian mall? I don't mean to walk down but to sit at the benches and to use the shades.

    1. Hels, yes they do. It's used by a lot of office workers for lunchtime walks from their offices to The Rocks, the Harbour Bridge and nearby recreational facilities. I was waiting around for a quiet moment in the afternoon to snap this shot.

    1. The Rocks are named after the sandstone which was found here and has been used in the construction of many of the early buildings in this area.

  9. The underside of the shade-the orange-looks great next to the green on the grass. Color is good!

  12. Great looking area. It's got a really "modern industrial" feel to it but is quite appealing.

  14. This is very nice. We never got to The Rocks when we were visiting Sydney a few years ago. But that just leaves things to look forward to on another visit.
