This is one of four gates on the Pyrmont Bridge, a swing bridge over Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour. The bridge was designed by Percy Allan and opened to traffic in 1902. It was one of the largest spanning swing bridges in the world and one of the first to be powered by electricity. It was closed to traffic in the 1984 when freeways south of Cockle Bay were built but was restored and reopened as a pedestrian bridge with the redevelopment of Darling Harbour in 1988. The swing bridge opens for tall ships and yachts and the gates keep pedestrians back from the opening. This view features the Sydney Convention Centre, the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour Hotel, Star of the Show Ferris Wheel and the Harbourside shopping centre.

A good idea to have held onto it for pedestrian purposes.
ReplyDeletegreat composition to include all these landmarks
ReplyDeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen one like that.
ReplyDeleteI imagine that if the gate closes just as you walk up to it, the wait seems really long.
ReplyDeleteIt does feel long but it's just a few minutes.
DeleteWhat a delightful visit that would be!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome that it has been restored and cared for instead of destroyed. Lovely photo.
ReplyDeleteNice one, Jim! Thanks for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme.
