The heritage listed National Mutual Building building is located along George Street, bounded by Angel Place and Ash Street. This building is a six-storey structure with basement, designed by Edward Raht and built in 1894 in the Federation Romanesque style. It was originally built for an American insurance company the Equitable Life Assurance Society then sold in 1923 to the National Mutual Life Association of Australia Ltd, who owned it until 1977. It was then a branch of a French bank, Societe Generale before being converted to retail and office space.

A beautiful facade
ReplyDeleteNot only beautifully design in the beginning (1894), but well preserved since. Heritage listing, which fulfills its responsibilty well, should have been placed on other architectural treasures that were destroyed.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Architecture!
ReplyDeleteFantastic artistic details in that building. It reminds me of an insurance building in our area, which was built in 1904.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful, solid building.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful building. I like the angle catching all those shadows!
