Dawes Point, sentry box

This view of the Sydney Opera House and part of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is from the Dawes Point wharf. The cylindrical sandstone structure with the copper dome is a sentry box to observe the foreshore area for defensive purposes, with the Dawes Point Battery located nearby. An inscription on the ground reads 'c.1880 reconstructed 2008'.

  3. Sally and I went on a massive mystery hunt to try to identify this structure, too, Jim. I found old images of where it stood as part of the old MSB lockout of the Walsh Bay port area before the plague reconstuction of that part of town. But nothing absolutely definitive. It is very nice now, though.

We are all 'doing' the coat-hanger today.

  5. Thanks, Julie. I searched high and low on the internet and couldn't find a thing. I was wondering if it might have been the guard house for the Dawes Point Battery which was demolished to build the bridge.

  6. It is always interesting to learn a bit of history while viewing a fabulous photograph. The sandstone piling with the Opera House to the rear makes for a really neat shot. Great job!

  7. That's a gorgeous image. Isn't there a similar structure on the opposite side at Milsons Point? (Going by fading memory, having spent a large part of Australia day on the lawns under the bridge a few years ago).

  9. Are there no legal documents in the Planning Dept (or whatever was relevant back in 1880), asking for Dawes Point to be approved? I wonder what the good burghers of Sydney had in mind.

  13. I am Australian and I also know nothing about the structure. Funny how we live in a place but don't always notice what goes on in our own back yard.
