Museum railway station, Mark Foy's entrance

This entrance to Museum Railway station was built in 1926. It is located outside the Downing Centre in Castlereagh Street which is a large court house complex that features local courts, district courts and a law library. The building once housed the Mark Foy's department store, whose name can feintly be seen above the entrance name, where the lettering has been removed but has left an imprint.

  1. I still use the expression 'more front than Mark Foys but most, actually nearly everyone, don't get it anymore.

  2. Mark, you are using the wrong term. We Melburnians use 'more front than Myers', and it is still well understood. Interesting piece of history J Bar.

  3. This is a stylishly simple and appealing entrance. Wouldn't you like seeing more modern use of elegant lettering like this? (Next time you are there, think about moving the trash can to the side.)

  4. Mark & Andrew, I find these regional differences within Australia quite fascinating.

Jack, I agree. It's a shame that we lose so much of the elegance of the past with modern developments. I was also thinking that the rubbish bin was in an unfortunate position for this shot.

  5. This museum seems very nice.I like it.
There is also railway museum in my neighborhood but this is modern architecture.
It depends on what kind of museum people like.

  9. I like the use of the elegant lettering - this is a museum I would definitely love to visit!

Moving the trash can would have made for a more perfect picture, but what in life really IS perfect?
