This graffiti art is on the back wall of the Botany View Hotel in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The hotel is located on the corner of King Street and Darley Street, with this back view from Maria Lane. Many businesses in Newtown whose walls had been targets of ugly graffiti have commissioned graffiti artists to cover those walls with their artwork. It seems to have worked in this case because the artwork or other walls of the hotel haven't been defaced since.
A true case of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em"! Graffiti CAN be very artistic!
ReplyDeleteA lot of building owners do the same here and it seems to work!
ReplyDeleteI am seeing more and more of these signs coverng walls over this way, too, Jim. They are quite in your face, but I like them. The one issue I have, however, is that many are very similar to each other.
ReplyDeleteJulie, I know what you mean. The font or style used in graffiti seems to all be the same.
ReplyDeleteLove this graffiti!
ReplyDeleteGreat capture, Jim. I prefer graffiti that is less like tagging and not text-based, but tagging and actual words-based graffiti are certainly a sign of our times...
ReplyDeleteInteresting place to visit in Melbourne and see graffiti is Hosier Lane:

Like Julie, I also find a lot of these tend to be too similar. And I find it irritating that I have trouble reading them!
ReplyDeleteJim I really like this.
ReplyDeleteLesley, I have the same frustration trying to read the text on some of these.
ReplyDeleteI like the photographers included on the right.
ReplyDeleteLove this! Good for the whole community!
ReplyDeleteA sad state of affairs where the only way to stop graffiti is to put up graffiti.
ReplyDeleteI had lunch there when I shot the cemetery and brickworks, didn't realise all that was around the corner. Did you shoot Mays Lane? If you did, let me know when you intend to use them so we don't overlap.
ReplyDeleteThey're certainly art in their own respective mood!
ReplyDeleteInviting you to join our meme about windows @Vienna and Beyond. See you!
Ann, no I haven't photographed May Lane. I'm curious to see what's there now.
ReplyDeleteI hope the hotel keeps it, grafitti are very artistic !!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jim. I like this one. The contrast of the smooth grey building and the riotous colour of the graffiti seems to work well.
ReplyDeletePaying graffiti artists to do the job is also becoming a trend here in Canada.
ReplyDeletebeautiful
ReplyDeletethe building itself looks lovely, the color is wonderful
That's a nice one. Good addition to your graffiti photo collection :D
