Arncliffe, St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church

St Francis Xavier’s Catholic Church is located along Forest Road, in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. The heritage listed church was designed by Clement Clancy in the Romanesque style and built in 1931. It features a distinctive 33 metre high round Celtic tower. A religious themed post for this Good Friday. The nearby school was shown yesterday.

    1. I think maybe not as much religiously in Australia as you do in Europe. But there are many cultural traditions like chocolate Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns that everyone gets involved in. We do get Good Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays.

  3. This shows just how amazing brickwork can be. The stone arched in front look older than the building, was something there before the church?

    1. The school and convent on the site predate the church but I'm not sure if the stonework does too.

  7. Très belle église, mais ne s'agit-il pas de Saint François Xavier et non Francis . Son culte est très vivant en France.

    Bien amicalement.

    1. Roger, the English translation for Saint François is Saint Francis. I believe he was born as Francisco.
