Royal Botanic Gardens, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail

The Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is an exhibition of hand-painted koala sculptures located in the Royal Botanic Gardens from 4 October to 30 November 2019. The unique designs are painted by Australian artists on these one metre high sculptures to encourage people to care for Australian plants and wildlife. More of these can be seen here and here.

  3. Well they certainly rival the cows in Shepparton! Hopefully they don't make all the nightime noises the real live ones do:)

    2. Not nightmares Jim - they make lots of grunting noises at night. Keep you awake if you're out in the bush camping:)

  5. A koala exhibition is very appropriate, though several of the artists painted them so that they don't remind one of koalas. In West Hartford, Connecticut, a similar exhibition had cows and in Naples, Florida, the equivalent had sea turtles.

  6. What a fun post.
The first instance of many artists creating a work from a singe template was "cows on parade" in Chicago in 1999. It inspired worldwide repeats with animals characteristic of each locale -- the koalas are an especially wonderful example. We even saw variously decorated penguins in Ushuaia, Argentina, which is the starting point for Antarctic expeditions!

    1. Thanks for that info, Mae. Sydney also once had a series of decorated rhinoceros sculptures around the city. There were also some giant snails although they weren't decorated, just plain colours.
