St Joseph's Hospital is located on the corner of Alice Street and Normanby Road, in the western suburb of Auburn. This heritage listed building was originally 'Duncraggan Hall', a residence designed by Harry Kent and built in 1876 in the Victorian Italianate style. The estate was sold to the Sisters of Charity in 1892 and became 'St. Josephs Sanitorium for Consumptives'. In 1903, 'St Josephs Hospital Two' was constructed on the land and the nuns occupied the building as their convent. It is now part of St Vincent’s Care Services.

What an elegant building! Thanks for the shadow shot, Jim, and Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteHello Jim, what a beautiful building. Thanks for sharing the beautiful shadows in the garden. Have a great Christmas week. Jo
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing such a beautiful place.. as soon as I get my blog up I'll be back to check this out further. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThat's certainly ornate! Too ornate for me, but I do admire the craftsmanship.
ReplyDeleteThe Victorian Italianate style was beautiful then and according to your photo, still looks beautifully preserved now. Was that large central tower just decorative, or is the space useful?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like bell tower but I can't imagine a residence needing one, even an opulent one.
DeleteOdd looking building with the central tower, not unpleasant though
ReplyDeleteNice looking bit tropical builing. Indeed very elegant.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful old building. Glad to hear that it is still being used.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful, very elegant building. The architecture is reminiscent of the Tuscan, Italian style. I also see Mauritanian elements from the Alhambra in Spain.
ReplyDeleteGreetings:)
It certainly has some elegant touches!
ReplyDeleteJim!
ReplyDeleteMay this Christmas bring smiles at your doorstep joy in your heart
and love and togetherness of friends and family in your home.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hello, I may be late to the party, in Oct 1973 to 1976 I was part of a group of young ladies starting our nursing career, a very exciting but daunting prospect. Average age 17 yrs.
ReplyDeleteSo many years have passed, WHAT I was hoping to find was some old photographs of those years. The hospital before the renovation, The nurses quarters at the back and the pool, many fun years were spent in the nursers quarters a den mother who would close the doors at 11pm. Sneeking out for a run to Big Chief for hamburgers on Parramatta Road.
If you have any photos I would love to see them. Regards Lorraine Haskell
