Coogee, memorial

'Reclaiming Spirit' or the Bali Memorial is located in Dunningham Reserve at Dolphin Point, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. It is a four-metre high bronze sculpture created by Sasha Reid in 2003, dedicated to the Australian victims of the Bali bombings in 2002. Twenty were residents of the eastern suburbs, including six members of the Coogee Dolphins rugby league team. The four metre high sculpture represents three linked figures signifying family, friends and community. Bowed in sorrow and remembrance, they comfort, support and protect each other. Joined together they form a strong and supported whole structure. It's a really powerful image against the sky, looking out across the Pacific Ocean.

It is an amazingly powerful concept realised, Jim. I agree. The promontory on which it is sited is just glorious and the perfect place in which to reflect upon the tragedy and the waste.

Good reminder.

I'd say that they are very moving too! The sculptures evoke sympathy and tenderness... I think it's the circles intertwining.

Beautifully set alongside the life of the skies and in the water.

And I know what Coogee is!:) I like the down under memorials, they're so more symbolic and artistic then the obvious matriological ones here.

Beautiful blue sea and sky! And a very moving memorial to the victims of the Bali bombing. It is sad that there are so many who spread destruction, rather than working to better their part of the world.
