Dulwich Hill, high school

The Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design, features this historic building on Seaview Street, in the inner west suburb of Dulwich Hill. It was designed by William E. Kemp in the Romanesque style.

  2. What a great building. I would've LOVED to attend a high school for the visual arts. Lucky lucky students.

  3. A truly beautiful building. As a former teacher I much preferred the more traditional buildings to the modern concrete tombs.

    Nice photo, too.

And thanks for coming by The Villages! Much appreciated!

  5. It seems Kemp had an interesting architectural style. Although the high school looks too bulky and almost industrial, the polychromatic brickwork of the Dulwich design ties this building to Kemp's Ultimo College (ex-Sydney Tech), don't you think? Even better, they were both built in the early 1890s.

    all the best

  6. I love those wonderful old buildings. Great blog and great pictures. I also visited your other blog and enjoyed those, the last ones of the railway station reminded me how much I enjoy them.

  7. The criss-cross detail on the gables make them stand out, and the arch windows make it a very pleasing building.

I noticed the speed humps - are there many in Sydney? Melbourne is the speed hump capital of Australia!

Many thanks for the html link.:-)

  8. Yes, Hels. This design is very similar to the Sydney Institute at Ultimo. I have a couple of photos of that, which I'll post at some stage.
Yes, BlossomFowerGirl. The speed humps are everywhere in Sydney too. There's a lot at zebra crossings, which are now called wombat crossings. :)

  9. Funnily enough, despite being in the suburb of Dulwich Hill, the high school name is actually Dulwich High. I don't know why.

  10. Thanks for that Sally. I didn't notice that. I've corrected my post and added a link to the school's website. Cheers.

  12. I walked into the Administration building of this school a couple months ago and it has the most beautiful energy about it. The artwork on display in the corridor is amazing.
