North Willoughby, pub

The Willoughby is a magnificent pub in the northern suburb of North Willoughby. This hotel was built in 1899 in the Federation style and a major restoration was undertaken in 1988. A lot of pubs and bars in Australia are called hotels because originally they also provided accommodation.

  4. That it is a pretty impressive pub. The Victorian features had disappeared and the Edwardian Federation features were already fully developed, even though it was still only 1899. But the red tiles on the verandas were too heavy and too red.

  8. What a fabulous old pub. I love the old world charm of buildings with verandahs.

(Been meaning to pop in for a while. Made it at last!)

  9. when I first arrived in NZ, I wondered too. Someone erroneously told me that hotels are high class pubs, pubs are where working people went to drink.

But when I went to some towns, pub and hotels are one and the same.

They should preserve this grand old lady

  10. I like that one. Wonder whether the interior lives up to the exterior - probably not.
