St Mark's Anglican Church is located on the corner of Darling Point Road and Greenoaks Avenue in the eastern suburb of Darling Point. This heritage listed sandstone church was designed by Edmund Blacket in 1852 in the Victorian Romanesque style, based on the 13th century English Gothic style. It was the venue for the fictional wedding in the classic Australian comedy movie Muriel's Wedding.
ooooooooohhh the church was beautifully designed (in a style that I love) and is obviously beautifully cared for. Thanks
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful steeple!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great church building. I enjoy all the things you feature. Gives me so much interesting facts and pictures of things I would never know about.
ReplyDeletegreat looking church!
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing that movie a few times and I cannot remember a single scene. That's a Toni Collette movie right?
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that every Anglican/Episcopal church seemed to be named St. Mark?
ewok
We could do with some of that beautiful blue sky here today!

A grand Sydney Sandstone building, under that blue Sydney sky! Great.
ReplyDeletePhoto Cache, yes, Toni Collette played Muriel. It also features Rachel Griffiths who is now in the American series Brothers and Sisters. I hadn't noticed that St Marks was such a popular choice for Anglican churches. We have a lot of Anglican churches in Australia but not many Episcopal.
ReplyDeleteSaw that movie a long time ago; now I want to watch it again. Lovel picture.
ReplyDeleteFascinating film info. Thanks Jim. Haven't actually seen the movie. Now, I will! Got to ask my daughter if she has the DVD.
ReplyDeleteHow's the church attendance in OZ? Many years ago, people told me despite the air con, people don't come.
ReplyDeleteAnn, I'd say that church attendance in Australia would be much the same as in New Zealand. I would guess they would most likely be down on attendances in the past but would have very little to do with whether the churches had air-conditioning.
ReplyDeletebeautiful building, against that wonderful blue sky!
ReplyDeleteWhen that was built, it was meant to last.
ReplyDelete...and the venue for the real wedding years ago of Elton John to a German woman whose name I have forgotten...
ReplyDeleteVery handsome stone church.
ReplyDeleteVictor, I believe Elton John married Renate Blauel here in 1984.
ReplyDeleteThis church is absolutely beautiful. I love the color of the sandstone.
ReplyDeleteThat is so like the architecture of the 19th century churches in Port Elizabeth. I gues both our cities have the British heritage.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'd like to sit inside.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful sky!
ReplyDeleteI really like this blog, beautiful and amazing photos.
