Redfern, Cathedral of the Annunciation Of Our Lady Theotokos

The Cathedral of the Annunciation Of Our Lady Theotokos is a Greek Orthodox Church on Cleveland Street, in the inner city suburb of Redfern. This bell tower and a corner turret are peeking above the trees that surround it. This heritage listed sandstone church was formerly St Paul's Anglican Church, built in 1848 and designed by Edmund Blacket.

  1. 1848 is old by Australian standards. Interesting style of architecture, this bell tower.

  3. Lovely tower...one of my favorite photo subjects.
I'm so glad you explained about its history. My mom is Serbian Orthodox and I have not seen that type of architecture for an Orthodox cathedral yet.

  4. Tash, it's not the usual architecture for Orthodox churches in Australia either. However, there are quite a few recycled churches in Sydney. Some that are no longer used as Anglican or Catholic churches have been taken over by Orthodox churches or other denominations.

  5. At some stage, the suburb must have decided that the local population required a Greek Orthodox Church rather than another Anglican Church. I am glad they recycled and saved the old architecture.

  7. There is nothing more appealing to my eye than an old bell tower towering above the trees and pointing towers the sky. Wht a beautiful capture. Love it.

  8. Hels, some older suburbs had two or more churches in the old days. As the number of parishioners shrunk in those suburbs, the parishes sold some of their church buildings to other denominations. There were a lot of Greek migrants moving into the inner city suburbs such as Redfern in the 1950s and 1960s, so it was a perfect match.

  11. It's so great to see some of the ancient buildings being looked after rather than modernizing.
