Sydney Ice Bear was an ice sculpture of a male polar bear that was located in Customs House Square this week. British sculptor Mark Coreth carved out the life-sized melting ice sculpture of a polar bear on Friday (top). By Monday, the sculpture had melted away to reveal a bronze skeleton (bottom). The display was timed to coincide with World Environment Day on Sunday, as a metaphor for the human impact on our environment and to create awareness of climate change. This is the sixth Ice Bear Project carving following on from those in London, Copenhagen, Montreal, Toronto and Manchester.
How cool! (pun intended)
ReplyDeleteWow. What a beautiful idea-- it does make an impact. I admire artists who do temporary work, like ice sculptors and sand sculptors. It seems like it would be so difficult to see your hard work melt or wash away.
ReplyDeletefantastic shot and ice sculpture!
ReplyDeletewhat a pity that it won't last...
Really cool J!
ReplyDeleteFascinating public feature! To see it melt creating various artistic shapes must have been an incredible sight!

That is very cool! I'm surprised I didn't hear about that.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing image Jim, and such a fantastic idea, the sculpture that keeps changing. So happy to see it.
ReplyDeleteEven with our current chilly snap I bet our bear melted a lot faster than any of those other cities.
ReplyDeleteIt seems so cruel to leave them out in the sun, don’t you think?
ReplyDeleteHave an ice day, Boonie
Excellent idea. I am sure the thought registered with people who saw the sculpture changing over the week.
ReplyDeleteBoonie S, it does seems like a bit of a shame to lose these works of art so quickly.
ReplyDeleteArtists do all sorts of things nowadahys. These are splendid examples of melting art.
ReplyDeleteI know Polar Bears are big, but I guess I just didn't realize HOW BIG! WoW! They're HUGE!
