Pioneers’ Memorial Park is bounded by Campbell Street, Macquarie Street and the Hume Highway, in the south western suburb of Liverpool. This was originally the site of St Lukes Cemetery. In 1970 the old cemetery was converted into a rest park, featuring original headstones and a memorial wall. This was the resting place of many prominent pioneers of this area and their families.
These are great J!
ReplyDeleteSuch artistically done tombstones! good capture, James!
ReplyDeleteI lived in the area in the 80's for about 5 years and never saw this!! I mist not have walked far, I think we miss a lot in our little cages wizzing by :(
ReplyDeleteI love the choice of 'rest' park!! I gather no bodies were exhumed and moved. Most unusual. I wonder when the original cemetery was closed to burials?
ReplyDeleteI am a bit of a graveyard tragic, so this is a wonderful post. I will check how close this is to a station, and get myself out there. I am gradually visiting all the other 'closed' cemeteries.
Julie, I don't know the full story but I get the impression that they probably did exhume most of the bodies when they created the park. There a few grave sites that look undisturbed though.
ReplyDeleteWow those are massive headstone memorials. It looks like a lovely spot.
ReplyDeleteI like what they have done with the headstones and the wall. We have a similar park in Grafton that I have had on my list to post about.
ReplyDeleteNice line up of headstones Jim, pulled in makes for an interesting bit of reading!
ReplyDeleteI've never, ever seen such a thing before.
