Pioneer Memorial Park is part of the the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, in the eastern suburb of Matraville. It was created in 1976 as a memorial of early pioneers and prominent citizens of the colony of New South Wales. It features 746 surviving memorials that were transported here in 1901 from the early Sydney burial grounds, Town Hall Cemetery, beside St Andrew's Cathedral and the Sydney Burial Ground, also known as Sandhills or Devonshire Street Ground Cemetery.
Looks like an interesting place to wander through. Great picture.

ReplyDeleteIt wasn't until I started reading Julie's Taphophile Tragics until I realised that so many early graves had to be relocated.
ReplyDeleteReally in Matraville, that is interesting. Nice light too.
ReplyDeleteThe cemetery was once known as Botany Cemetery but it is actually in Matraville.
DeleteIt must get very confusing with all these re-interments and name changes.
ReplyDeletebtw, nice to see you back!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful Sydney pic on your blog. glennjacob
ReplyDelete"Transported" is an unfortunate word to use, although on second thoughts, it seems very apt :)
ReplyDeleteAre the engraved details on the stones still legible? In a recent post, I was very interested in the convicts' grave stones in Wilberforce.
Hels, the engravings are legible on most headstones but some of the sandstone ones are quite weathered and difficult to read.
DeleteAppreciation regarding this webpage, this weblog is in fact awesome. Celia.
