This is a detailed view of the western side of the Anzac War Memorial, which stands in Hyde Park South. The building was designed by Bruce Dellit in the Art Deco architectural style and completed in 1934. The sculptures and bas reliefs that adorn the building were created by Rayner Hoff, who also created the powerful "Sacrifice" sculpture inside. It was built as a memorial to the Australian Imperial Force of World War I and is the focus of commemoration ceremonies on Anzac Day, 25th April, which marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the war.

ReplyDeleteI got up this morning at 5 am (unbelievable... I never move before 8 am normally!!!) and saw squillions of people going to the dawn service in the cold and dark. It was very emotional.

Your link explaining Anzac Day was very helpful. One version of Waltzing Mathilda is a sad story about an injured soldier returning from Turkey and being ignored by the citizens. Is that still played in Australia? It is an exceptionally poignant song.
ReplyDeleteI think that's "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda", which features some lyrics of "Waltzing Matilda". Haven't heard it in ages but I'm sure it gets played somewhere in Australia.
