An abstract view above the main entrance of the General Post Office (GPO) building at Martin Place, between George Street and Pitt Street. The GPO was constructed in stages from 1866 to 1891 and was designed by colonial architect James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style. The white marble statue of Queen Victoria is flanked by allegorical figures. This building was built before Australia's federation, when we became an independent nation, so below them is the United Kingdom coat of arms sculpted in sandstone.
Jim, I think that's the coolest post office I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteIt is like no post office I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful craftmanship!
ReplyDeleteRather splendid and no doubt expensive sculptural decoration for a young colony, but after all the post office was the most important public building there ever was.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how times change and post offices are now being redeveloped.
DeleteI am always taking shots of bits of architecture like this. I find them quite intriguing!
ReplyDeleteYou have a very nice Post Office there Jim - despite the youth of Australia compared with elsewhere in the world there is some lovely architecture to be admired out there.
