60 Martin Place and St Stephen's Uniting Church

This office block at 60 Martin Place rises high above St Stephen's Uniting Church in Macquarie Street. The 28-storey office block, bordered by Macquarie Street to the east and Phillip Street to the west, was built in 1971. It has been occupied by the Westpac Banking Corporation but will soon be redeveloped into a 32-storey tower. St Stephen's Presbetyrian Church was built in 1935 after the former church built in 1875 along Phillip Street was demolished to allow Martin Place to be extended to Macquarie Street.

  5. The modern & the old. I don't know if you remember this Jim but I can't remember which church it was but I do remember when I lived in Sydney, I left 26 years ago, there was a big kafuffle about a small stone church in the city area & they wanted to demolish the building & build a new bigger modern several storey church on the property as the congregation had outgrown the church building. The Heritage Council I think they're called denied them permission as the church was heritage listed. The Congregation officials then requested for the Heritage Council to buy it from them so they could build a new church somewhere else. They said they couldn't do that. I remember the whole drama was in the news for quite a while.

  6. Tony, if it happened that long ago I might be too young to remember it. It would be interesting to see whether the church survived.
