Gladesville, Bedlam Point Wharf

This wharf is located at Bedlam Point on the Parramatta River, in the lower north shore suburb of Gladesville. It can be accessed from Punt Road through Banjo Paterson Park. The name Bedlam is a corruption of Bethlam from Bethlehem, which was the name of England's first lunatic asylum and may relate to the nearby former Gladesville Mental Hospital

  2. Spectacular view, but why was it called Bedlam Point? Bedlam was an awful place.

    1. The former Gladesville Mental Hospital was located nearby so I guess the name has a connection with Bedlam referring to the Bethlen Royal Hospital which specialised in the mentally ill.

  4. Valerie, there was actually a different wharf used in those days which is around the other side of the point. Only the stone footings remain but I'll try and get a shot of that.
