The remains of the Oyster Cove Gasworks are located along Wondakiah Drive, in the north shore suburb of Wollstonecraft. This was originally the site of Robey's Sugar Works, later taken over by the Colonial Sugar Refinery Co. In the late 1860s the Australian Mineral Oil Co. established a kerosene works here and from around 1890, part of the site was also used by the Neokratine Safety Explosive Co of N.S.W. The North Shore Gas Co took over in 1912 with construction of coal gasworks from 1913 to 1917, which operated until 1987. Wondakiah residential development was built here from 1998 with restoration and redevelopment of the remaining structures on site which are the Boiler House, the Exhauster House, the Carburetted Water Gas Plant and the Chimney.
It looks out of place amongst those apartments or maybe that should be the other way round.
ReplyDeleteThe apartments certainly dwarf the original buildings but it's good they were saved and have been repurposed as a gym, indoor pool and a community hall.
DeleteBonjour,
ReplyDeleteUne belle capture photographique...
Gros bisous 🌺
The older structure suits me! Good that these were saved.
ReplyDeleteA fine Pacific historic!
ReplyDeleteReminds one of Honolulu's Kakaako Pumping Station. I worked in the office building beside it seen here:

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that, Cloudia.
DeleteYes I can see that it's a very Victorian style building, good to see it still there.
ReplyDeleteThere is an abundance of handsome brick buildings there, isn't it?

Quite a contrast with modern apartments.
ReplyDelete...Jim, this property has had such a varied history of uses. Nice to see it still used and in such wonderful condition. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is a big contrast. However, I am glad this place has been conserved. It is nice to be able to take a look at the past. #OurWorldTuesday
ReplyDeleteLovely architecture and such warm aspect of the brick facade; in an interesting mix with the new modern buildings!!
