This ghost sign is on the side of Porter House, a commercial building located along Castlereagh Street. This heritage listed building was designed by J F Hilly and built in 1876 in the Victorian Free Classical Style. It was originally used by Dixson & Sons tobacco factory and warehouse. The sign, which is looking a bit tired these days, advertises a "Johnson & Sons Ltd, Leather and Grindery Merchants" who took over the building in 1891.

ReplyDeleteI love these historical photos. The sign does look tired, but it's been there long enough to get that way.
ReplyDeleteNice take on the theme Jim.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy finding old signs with a history!
ReplyDeleteLove this sign. Well done. As a teenager in the 1970s, my hobby was leatherwork. I purchased leather and tools at Porter House. We knew it as "Porter's Leather Grindery."
ReplyDeleteA wonderful, old style, counter service store. There was no self-service, nor browsing. The salesmen wore grey dust coats and were extremely knowledgeable.
Memories...
