Porter House, sign (Theme Day: Tired)

This ghost sign is on the side of Porter House, a commercial building located along Castlereagh Street. This heritage listed building was designed by J F Hilly and built in 1876 in the Victorian Free Classical Style. It was originally used by Dixson & Sons tobacco factory and warehouse. The sign, which is looking a bit tired these days, advertises a "Johnson & Sons Ltd, Leather and Grindery Merchants" who took over the building in 1891.

  2. Excellent idea for the theme Jim, no wonder it's tired, I would be too if I'd been hanging around that long 😀

  7. I love these historical photos. The sign does look tired, but it's been there long enough to get that way.

  9. Love this sign. Well done. As a teenager in the 1970s, my hobby was leatherwork. I purchased leather and tools at Porter House. We knew it as "Porter's Leather Grindery."
A wonderful, old style, counter service store. There was no self-service, nor browsing. The salesmen wore grey dust coats and were extremely knowledgeable.
    Memories...
