This artwork is on display in Westfield shopping centre, in the eastern suburb of Bondi Junction. This "G'Day" sign is part of an exhibition by artist CJ Hendry called "Straya", which is Australian slang for “Australia”. The exhibition celebrates Australian slang using custom street signs with slanguage and sayings installed in locations around Australia. Others signs installed in cities, towns and the outback include: "Aussie", "Old Mate", "Bewdy", "Noice", "Avago", "Hard Yakka", "Brekky", "Hoo Roo", "This Arvo", "You Beaut", "Yeah Nah", "Easy As", "Woop Woop", "Ken Oath", "Cashed Up Bogan" and "Chuck a U-ey".
I like the slanguage on the sign. Thanks for explaining
ReplyDeleteA very Aussie saying.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's Waltzing Matilda, which gets less comprehensive by the line.
ReplyDeleteHow funny! It's hilarious when I meet people overseas and I use a word that I think is common but don't realise it's uniquely Australian.
DeleteThere's a book I have that includes the lyrics and starts foot noting words. By the end the last foot note is "English speaking country?"
DeleteThat's funny. There's a lot of old slang in that song which I'm sure many young or new Australians would struggle with too.
DeleteWow that is interesting---thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMB
That indeed is interesting!
ReplyDeleteI like this sign! Nice to see slang/true language being represented. Thanks for linking up.
ReplyDeleteSome of those signs would be startling to see!
ReplyDeleteLinda, you can see a lot of them on her Instagram. I've posted the link on her name in the post.
