Kurnell, Solander Monument

The Solander Monument is located in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, in the southern suburb of Kurnell. Daniel Solander was a Swedish botanist who accompanied Captain James Cook, the English explorer, navigator and cartographer on the first recorded European expedition, to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia. The south headland of Botany Bay is called Solander Point and this monument was erected by the Swedish community in 1914. An oil tanker is moored at the long oil refinery wharf in the distance.

  3. Quite a stark and imposing monument, although it is difficult to gauge its scale in this photo.

  5. It's an interesting monument although it rather resembles a chimney in its shape. I wonder what the memorialized botanist would make of it?
