Erskineville, Rose of Australia Hotel

Rose of Australia Hotel is located on the corner of Swanston Street and George Street, in the inner city suburb of Erskineville. It was designed by Prevost and Ruwald and built in 1934 in the inter-war free classical architectural style.

Erskineville, art

This urban artwork is located on the facade of a former warehouse along Rochford Street, in the inner city suburb of Erskineville. The building is home to Commune Studios, a co-working space for creative industry freelancers, small businesses and entrepreneurs. It is a collective of creatives from many fields - design, photography, film, journalism, public relations, events – all working under one roof. I photographed this mouth a few years ago when the lips were originally red, which can be seen here.

Birchgrove, St John the Evangelist Anglican Church

St John the Evangelist Anglican Church is located on the corner of Birchgrove Road and Spring Street, in the inner west suburb of Birchgrove. This heritage listed church was built in 1892 in the Victorian Free Gothic architectural style.

This marina is located on Abbotsford Bay in the inner west suburb of Abbotsford. The view from Abbotsford Cove Foreshore Park looks out towards Parramatta River and Gladesville Bridge.

Balmain, ferry wharf

The sun sets behind the Balmain West Ferry wharf, in the inner west suburb of Balmain. The wharf is located at the end of Elliott Street on the shore of Iron Cove, so is also known as the Elliott Street Wharf.

The Domain, signs

These banners along Art Gallery Road mark the border between the Botanic Gardens and The Domain. The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney Tower and the MLC Centre can be seen in the distance.

Hyde Park, Frederic Joseph Walker memorial fountain

The Frederic Joseph Walker memorial fountain is located on the western side of Hyde Park North. F.J. Walker was a prominent city businessman whose company produced sheepskins and processed meat for export. The plaque nearby reads as follows: This fountain was presented to the City of Sydney by the family of Frederic Joseph Walker as a tribute to his memory and all who pioneered primary industry in Australia. 15th February 1961.

The Rocks, DFS Galleria

These heritage listed buildings, built in the Federation Free Classical architectural style, are located along George Street at The Rocks. In 1988, a large commercial building called the DFS Galleria (Duty Free Store) was erected behind them with the shopfront facades retained and the buildings incorporated into the complex. The former New York Hotel built in 1908 has a five storey tower section and a lower three storey section splayed at a slight angle to follow the change in the alignment of the street. The three storey Quay Chambers building was built in 1913. The shop and residence with the arched balcony and window along with the three storey shop and residence on the corner of Globe Street were built in 1914.

Sans Souci, mural

This is one of two mosaics located beside the entrance of St Finbar's Catholic Primary School in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The other can be seen here.

Darlington, Institute Building

The Institute Building is located along City Road, on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. It was designed by architect Benjamin Backhouse and built in stages from 1870 to 1892 with additions by other architects continuing in 1912 and 1928. It was built in the Italianate architectural style but contains French Gothic style elements. It housed the New South Wales Institution for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind, the largest of its type in Australia.

Darlington Centre, Press Building

The Darlington Centre is a conference centre and event space along City Road, on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. The Press Building is a restored house in Victorian Italianate architectural style built in the 1880s, which was formerly the director's residence for the adjacent former Deaf and Blind Institute.

Darlington, University of Sydney, restaurant

The Darlington Centre and Forum Restaurant are a conference centre and event space on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Darlington. The Darlington Centre is a restored 1880s house, formerly the director's residence for the adjacent former Blind Institute. The Forum Restaurant was built in the adjacent space in 2002, with twelve 19th century stone gateposts, excavated from the site, defining the gardens and lawns. A couple of cranes dominate the skyline from new developments nearby.

Camperdown, University of Sydney, Old Geology Building

The Old Geology Building is on the University of Sydney campus, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1895 but was altered by Professor Leslie Wilkinson in 1920. It is located near the Parramatta Road footbridge entrance and opposite the Footbridge Theatre.

Haymarket, Corporation Building

The Corporation Building is located on the corner of Hay Street and Parker Street, in the inner city suburb of Haymarket. It was designed by George McRae and built in 1895 in the Federation Anglo-Dutch architectural style. It was originally used for administration for the nearby markets. It was renovated in 2000 and now houses a community centre, a restaurant and shops.

Customs House, Vivid Sydney

 These colourful light projections on Customs House at Circular Quay were displayed during the Vivid Sydney festival, from 22 May to 8 June 2015. "Enchanted Sydney" was created by Spinifex Group. The projections are fitted specifically to the architectural form of the building, using graphics that integrate natural imagery with textures and colours that reflect aspects of Sydney's natural environment.

Botany Bay, navigation mark & boat ramp

The sun sets behind Sydney Airport and is reflected on Botany Bay. The navigation mark, floating walkways and pylons are at the Botany Bay Boat Ramp, in the eastern suburb of Botany.

Pyrmont, warehouse

The former warehouse was the Royal Edward Victulating Yard Building C, located along Pirrama Road on Darling Island, in the inner west suburb of Pyrmont. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon and built in 1915 in the Federation architectural style. It was used by the Royal Australian Navy and is now the Sydney headquarters for the Seven Network, one of Australia's three major commercial television networks. The city skyline can be seen in the distance.

Pyrmont, The Star, Vivid Sydney

The Star casino features this sign outside the Pirrama Road entrance, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont. This year the casino took part in the Vivid Sydney Festival, which ran from 22 May to 8 June 2015. Along with other lighting displays, the large letters were wrapped in silver and were backlit by these giant lights which put on quite a show at night.
