Maroubra Beach

Maroubra Beach is another popular beach in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. This photo was actually taken in winter when the beach is not crowded.

  1. Not quite certain how come this post got posted - the date stamp seems to be a bit confused.

Maroubra is so close to me but I have never been there. Want to do the next part of the coastal walk though which ends in Maroubra.

  2. I see you have joined the City Daily Photo Blog community. Excellent - welcome aboard! I have added you to my favourites list.

May I ask your first name, please?

  3. Your blog has been included in our guide Around The World.

The guide is both a record of old blogs and a listing of new blogs. Although originally arising from the "City Daily Photo Blog" lists this is an independent publication. Inclusion here does not imply that a blog qualifies for nor is officially a CDPB. Our criteria are that photographs mainly from and related to a specific geographical location (not necessarily a "city" but usually more specific than a whole country or region) are posted at dated intervals (not necessarily daily) and archives are readily searchable by date.

Please keep us informed of any changes to your details.

  4. Julie, I'm just getting the hang of this whole blogging thingo and my Monday post somehow escaped early. No worries, I'm sure I'll figure it all out evenually. I'm still trying to work out how to make my posts look exactly how I want them to look because when I compose them they seem to be configured totally diferently to how they post. Is it just me or is that way it works for everyone? By the way, my first name is Jim. I'm trying to find a way to put that in my profile somewhere without changing my nickname.

You sorted out the name and nickname acceptably, I see.

Not sure if I can help from a distance with two other things that I can see: scheduling a post; and, the layout of posts.

Scheduling: When you start a new post you can either save it as a draft or post it to your blog. If you post, it will have the time/date stamp of the very first time that Blogger did an auto-save for you. If this is not the time/date stamp you want then you need to key in the one you DO want BEFORE you press Post. To do this click on Post Options which is on this New Post screen. At the same time, just check which Time Zone you have set you blog up to be in. I will walk you through this later if you are not sure. The thing that confuses me with what happened with this future post is just that - it is in the future. I am not sure how that happened unless you are in an inappropriate time zone.

Next: the layout of your post. A lot of this has to do with the specific template you have chosen for your blog. Tell me which one you have chosen, if you would please. That will make it easier for me to discuss it with you. A blog has three areas: the header; the main area; and, the side bar. Each of these is allocated a width which fits within the size as controlled by the template. Let's just talk about the width of the main area.

Say, your template sets your main area to something like 650 pixels (px) wide. This means that any images that you upload can only add up to 600 before the template forces a new line. So, looking at your Maroubra post. You have 3 images that look to be about 300 wide each. So just two of these will fit before you have to go to a new line.Blogger also allows for a margin of 10px around each image.

Now my guess is that you are working in compose mode. Why not try going in and re-editing your Maroubra post and this time put the two images at the top, then put your text and finally have your third image down the bottom. My guess is that you want the text to stretch across the full width of the main area, yes?

There are other ways of doing this but it would require that you work in "edit html".

Enough of all this. Let's take it one bit at a time.

Look at the time zone you have set for your blog. And then tell me the template that you have chosen for your blog.

  6. Thanks for taking the time to help me Julie. I don't think the problem was with the time zone but it had to do with me mucking around with the Post Options. I had prepared this Maroubra post for Sunday but then had the new Moss Vale photos which I wanted to post straight away. When I got back to it today, I realised that my Moss Vale post had been saved as a draft and my Maroubra post had been posted instead after I had posted immediately and even though I changed the date to tommorow's date, it stays posted. Oh well, no new post tomorow and I should be back on track on Tuesday.
I'm okay with that layout of Maroubra since I've used medium photos there. My biggest hassle is with using the larger photos, getting two photos to line up at the top of the page (without going back to edit and move them again) and putting the text under the photos because it automatically tries to run down the side eventhough there's not much room there for text.
Yes, I use the Compose Mode but sometimes I have to use the Edit HTML mode to get the text where I want it. The template I have used is Minima but I made some changes to the widths.
Thanks again for taking the time to help.

  7. All good advice there from Julie -

If you publish a post and then edit it, change the date and then publish - it publishes with the new date -

If you Save it and do not Publish it will be unpublished and shown as a Draft post; when you edit it again and then press Publish it will become scheduled.

You don't need to know a lot of HTML to work in edit mode - the problem with compose mode is that blogger can add extra code relating to spacing mainly that will interfere with the layout. In edit mode you can see the coding and remove it if neccesary.

    cheers

  8. Thanks for that feedback, Around The World. Thanks for expaining the differences between Save and Publish. That's very helpful. It's good to know that it's blogger that is adding the extra code in Compose Mode and affecting my layout and it isn't something I'm doing incorrectly. I'm sure I'll get the hang of all the quirks of HTML after a while. Thanks again.

  9. Welcome Jim, we seem to live in the same area.

I still have trouble getting my posts to do what I want them to. I can't get the hang of working in edit mode, not sufficiently computer literate.

  10. Thanks Ann. It's good to have more encouragement and know that it's not just me having trouble with it. Cheers.
