Darlinghurst, Sacred Heart Catholic Church

The Sacred Heart Catholic Church is located at the corner of Oxford Street and Darlinghurst Road, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. The original church built on this site opened in 1850, with the adjacent Sacred Heart School featured yesterday built in 1880. The old church was demolished and the foundations used for this larger church which opened in 1911. The University of Notre Dame took over the site in 2004 and restored the church in 2008 for use by the university and as a local parish.

  3. Julie, I've never wandered inside. I'm interested in seeing the mural that was apparently relocated to the back wall during the restoration. That must have taken some effort and care.

  5. Beautiful landmark; When I am in a strange city where I do not know my way around I always locate a church because they are usually in the middle of "things" and easily to locate!

  10. I can imagine a wedding here, with the Bride and Groom poised at the top of the stairs and the confetti flying. Lovely church.

  11. An interesting church with an interesting history, Jim. You confused me a bit with "inner city suburb" but I guess it's just continental differences in English usage.

  12. Kay L. Davies, inner city suburbs is what we call the suburbs immediately outside the central business district which we also refer to as 'the city'.
