The Royal Hotel is located in the inner city suburb of Darlington. It sits on the prominent corner of Abercrombie Street and Codrington Street, behind this roundabout. It was built in 1894 by James England to serve the needs of local railway workers at the nearby Eveleigh railway workshops. The suburb was named after Governor Ralph Darling. The area was originally known as Golden Grove when it was used as market gardens, and that name remains as a locality within the suburb.
Its name suits it well-it is a darling building!
ReplyDeleteLove it J! Great building and a great shot!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful a sight. May time and life continue to treat it kind. Please have a good Thursday.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely building!
ReplyDeleteIt looks very classical. It would be nice if they eliminated that glaring banner at the top and put the name on something more suitable for the building.
ReplyDeleteJack, I completely agree with you there. There are so many beautiful pubs around Sydney that are defaced by these sorts of advertising banners.
ReplyDeleteIt's very nice isn't it. A pity about the advertising signs. Some of Melbourne's municipalities very tightly control advertising on buildings.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim I will find time on the weekend to post the photo to my Royal Collection along with two international contributions received recently.
ReplyDeleteI wonder this hotel looked like in the era of the six o'clock swill?
ReplyDeleteHow good is that architecture?? It's been a long time since I was in Darlinghurst, but good to see some things never change!
ReplyDeleteRedNomadOZ, it's actually in Darlington, close to Redfern. This suburb was named after Governor Ralph Darling, while Darlinghurst and Darling Point were named after his wife Elizabeth Darling. I'll add something about it to the post.
