The Sydney Technical College building, which is part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), is located along Mary Ann Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Built in 1891, it was designed by William Kemp in the Federation Romanesque architectural style. The brick and terracocotta construction is adorned with Australian ornamental plants and animals such as such as waratahs, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, platypuses and lizards.
Very impresive building Jim Amazing to read about the adornments.
ReplyDeleteThis is similar to the architecture of H. H. Richardson in the USA around that time (or maybe a decade earlier). In the USA, this style of architecture would have had less brick and more brownstone.
ReplyDeleteReally like the style of these buildings Jim, love the name of last post The Muse. Is it just me or is it impossible to pull the photos in really close anymore, it comes in a bit and then that's it. Annoying because sometimes it's nice to get really close.
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely architecture.
ReplyDeleteLovely building...
ReplyDeleteA stately building and I can't ever remember hearing the suburb Ultimo - must look it up on Google.
ReplyDeleteDecades since last I went to a Tech. Thank you for the memories, studying Engineering back home in Germany.
ReplyDeletePlease have a good Tuesday.

It is a beautiful brick Tech college. Wonderful photo.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful building! I stayed one block away from it, in Bulwara Rd, during my visit to Sydney in July :-) Great to see it again!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting building, Jim! I love the adornments that have been added! Fascinating! Terrific capture as always. Have a great week! Hope you're continuing to mend!

That's an interesting building. It's very appealing.
ReplyDeleteNice shot, Jim. I enlarged the photo but there was nary an echidna to be seen, just that beautiful blue sky reflected in the windows. Lovely!

Very grand looking structure.
ReplyDeleteKay, the animals are on the arch below the Syd Tech Coll name. If you click on the link you can see a lizard and a platypus on the achitecture website. I'll have to go back and get some close up shots.
ReplyDeleteA great representative of that period of architecture. Nice pic too.
ReplyDeleteLove the beautiful architectural designs.
ReplyDeleteThe building is majestic and the clear blue sky enhances it!
ReplyDeleteIn India also there is a TAFE but it is a manufacturing company - Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited!
Surprising for me, I love William Kemp and I love Federation Romanesque architecture. But Melbourne doesn't have much, so the TAFE building in Ultimo becomes even more precious.
ReplyDeleteHi there - I wonder if people will be taking pictures of the buildings that many schools have just got in a few generations - I think not!
ReplyDeleteThey really don’t do buildings like that anymore.
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
What an impressive building! If you hadn't mentioned it, I'd have thought it was at least 100 years old. It has such lovely classic lines!
ReplyDeleteA very handsome building, Jim! Has it ever been remodeled? That seems like a LOT of window for a pre-1900 building.
ReplyDeleteI can see the sky reflecting on the windows... and its looking really awesome!!
ReplyDeletePixellicious Photos
Francisca, it may have been restored over the years but not remodelled. I think it would have been very hard to alter the original design without ruining it.
ReplyDeletethanks for stopping by ^.^
ReplyDeleteThat building looks so good, impressive structure..
ReplyDeleteLovely architecture. I adore the fountain!
ReplyDeleteGreat adornments for a school. And we strongly support the idea of technical colleges!
ReplyDeleteReally, adorned? I would love to see this. Shall have to make a project of it. Compare it with the GPO in MP.
ReplyDeleteJulie, some may think that these amimals crawling along the walls look strange but I think they are great adornments. :)
