The Sydney Monorail, also known as the Metro Monorail, is a single loop monorail that connects the city's central business district with Darling Harbour and Chinatown. After 25 years of service, the monorail will cease operating on 30 June 2013 and be demolished to make way for the development of the new Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct in Darling Harbour. It is seen here turning the corner from Harbour Street to Liverpool Street, near the Australian Chinese Ex-Services Monument. The sign painted on the side announces: Last Chance! Farewell Sydney 30.06.2013.
What a pity Jim .... I guess space is everything in a big city.
ReplyDeleteAnd it wasn't a well planned transport system because it didn't go very far and didn't really connect well with existing transport systems.
DeleteSad to see it go but if it wasn't integrated well into the system .....
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible shame.
ReplyDeleteSydney's buses are awful petrol guzzlers.. only the trains are excellent.
And the mono-rail was the most excellent of all.
I was about to ask what people there thought about that, but saw your reply to Dianne. Guess it won't be missed much.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was mostly just used by tourists as a way to see the city above street level.
DeleteIt was a good concept. Sad it was not thought out very well. Aurevoir monorail.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awarding winning shot of the monorail. perfect on the curve! WOW
ReplyDeleteAwww, that's a great shot. Sad to hear it will be gone soon.
ReplyDeleteSreisaat Adventures: Signs: Push
oh that is too bad...i'm sure it will be missed...i've only been on a monorail at disney :)
ReplyDeleteNever rode the monorail when I was in Sydney! Always thought it was an odd expense aimed at tourists only! But now, seeing its departure, there is a touch of sadness that it will fade into another era!
