Leichhardt post office is located on the corner of Norton Street and St Johns Road, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. This heritage listed building was designed by James Barnet and built in 1888 in the Victorian Academic Classical and Victorian Italianate architectural styles. The building was sold in 1992 and the post office had moved to a nearby shopping centre. Although it returned in 2012 to the side annexe section of the building, the main building has struggled to maintain long term tenants.
Great looking postoffice, could even pass as a church. I see it is no different to here in that they sell off the building.
ReplyDeleteIt just might be a grand opportunity to convert to a very unique residence. What a lovely structure. Happy RT2.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it never became a restaurant or cafe because this area has so many of them, particularly Italian ones.
DeleteSuch a lovely building imposing in a corner position! It could be a wonderful venue for a historic gallery of the area! Then it could be subsidised by council and guarded by heritage administrators.
ReplyDeleteNice looking building. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful old building. I hope it can find tenants and stay in use.
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome building indeed, Jim, I also hope they find some tenants for it!
ReplyDeleteVictorian Italianate architecture is pretty stunning, isn't it? And surprising very suitable for Australia's public facilities (banks, post officers, schools etc). If any developer pulls it down, I would put that developer in gaol for the rest of his life, on bread and water.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a building with character--and the red roof just enhances it!
ReplyDeleteBits of Blue, Red, Yellow
Pretty building, I love the red roof ! Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteThey certainly knew how to build elegant public buildings in those days.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
What a beautiful place. Because where we are counts. I wonder if we lost track of that or if our notions of beauty have changed...
ReplyDeletethis type of architecture is very clean.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful building.
