Surry Hills, Chinese Presbyterian Church

The Chinese Presbyterian Church is located on the corner of Crown Street and Albion Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. This church was originally the Fullerton Memorial Presbyterian Church, built in 1905 in the Federation Academic Gothic architectural style. The Chinese Presbyterian Church moved here in 1957 when it outgrew its church in Campbell Street. At this time of year, you have a better view of the church since the trees surrounding it have lost their leaves.

  4. This is a lovely church - a classic shape that was imported all over the world by the Brits - there are many like this in the US in our New England region. Happily this is not ornate like the Church of England - the Presbyterian Scots were far more restrained. The fallen leaves allow for this great shot of a classic house of worship!

  7. A Chinese Presbyterian Church must be quite a unique concept in Sydney. I don't know of any in Melbourne. And that lower stained brick line is interesting - as if a sign a rising damp. But maybe it's just age. Fascinating building!

    1. You must be referring to the sandstone blocks which make up the surrounding wall.

  8. So glad that you could tell us the architecture style as I would not have been able to narrow it down. I do like the all-brick façade and crisp lines.

At first I had trouble telling the difference between the tree limbs and their shadows!
