AWA Tower

The AWA Tower is a heritage listed office and communications building along York Street, opposite Wynyard Park. This 15 storey building with a large white radio tower on top, in the shape of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, was the tallest building in Australia until 1958. It was designed by architects Morrow and Gordon and built in 1939 in the art deco architectural style. AWA Tower was the headquarters for Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Limited a broadcaster and manufacturer of radios, record players and other electrical equipment. The building on the left is the Philippine Airlines Building built in 1964.

  2. A beautiful building. Is that a platform about 3/4 of the way up the white spire?

    1. Yes it is. I'm not sure if it is used for any communication equipment or as a way to maintain the top of the tower.

  5. Very late art deco architectural style, I would say. But I do love the two AWA logos at the top.
