This mural is on the side wall of the former Valhalla Cinema, along Glebe Point Road, in the inner west suburb of Glebe. Titled "Kelly & her Gang", I suspect Kelly is or was, a local identity and her gang were her colourful friends from the inner city. The title is a play on the Australian film "Ned Kelly and His Gang" released in 1906 and believed to be the first narrative movie ever made in the world. It tells the story of bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang of outlaws.

ReplyDeleteOhhh, back in 1995 we stayed in a backpacker in that street.
A lot to see here.

ReplyDeleteAnd the blues are bold!
DeleteVery colourful :) Thanks for participating Jim.
ReplyDeleteWho is Kelly? And why does she have a gang?
ReplyDeleteI suspect Kelly is or was a local identity. I'll add a bit more of an explanation in the post.
DeleteFun mural!!
ReplyDeleteThis mural was painted in the 1993 by the young people attending the Glebe Youth Centre. Some of the kids were indigenous and another claimed to be a descendant of Ned. The concept emerged from a special camp . The mural was later repainted and although it was changed, as the original facilitator of design I believe - the integrity of the community artwork was maintained.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that insight, Bindi.
DeleteKelly Jaffer was a friend of mine back in the 90’s when we all lived in Glebe. The mural depicts great time amongst friends in our local community. We were all in the mural before she was commissioned to paint over it again in 2008. It was a pleasure to know Kelly. She now resides in Tamworth.. If you happen to read this Kelly, all my love Marie xx
DeleteThanks for that, Marie.
