The Rocks, Campbells Cove

A view of Campbells Cove at The Rocks, below the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The replica of a square-rigged colonial sailing ship mast adorns the outdoor dining area of the Waterfront Restaurant housed in the former Campbell's Stores built in 1839. This will be one of the best positions to watch the world's biggest New Year's Eve fireworks displays and celebrations on Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Darlinghurst, Christmas tree

This contemporary, metallic Christmas tree is located along Oxford Street at Taylor Square, in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This year the decorations were changed to the jewel-coloured stars, designed by Boccalatte, which the City of Sydney now uses across the city on metrolights, flags, banners, posters and light projections.

Darling Harbour, lighthouse, Santa Fest

The Cape Bowling Green lighthouse is located at the Australian National Maritime Museum, at Darling Harbour. It was originally built in 1874 at Cape Bowling Green, south of Townsville, Queensland. It was replaced in 1987 and then transported to the north wharf of the maritime museum in Sydney in 1994. Santa Claus keeps watch from the balcony during Santa Fest.

Darling Harbour, ferry restaurant, Santa Fest

The S.S. South Steyne is a steam ferry built in 1938 which was in service between Manly and Circular Quay for over 36 years. It was restored in 1987 and is now used as a floating restaurant at Darling Harbour. This view is from Harbourside, showing Santa Claus on the top deck and banners along the Pyrmont Bridge as part of Santa Fest.

Surry Hills, Christmas stars

These Christmas star lights have been installed along Crown Street, in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. The stars are displayed in the Southern Cross or Crux formation, a constellation that is visible from the southern hemisphere. It is used as a national symbol of Australia and also appears on the Australian flag. Since 2011, the City of Sydney has been using faceted, jewel-coloured stars, designed by Boccalatte, across the city growing each year so they now appear on metrolights, flags, banners, posters, light projections and Christmas trees. In past years, these star decorations had also been created in neon.

World Square, Christmas tree

This contemporary Christmas tree has been located in the middle of World Square shopping centre. The tree is covered in fairy lights and light icicles hang above part of the square.

The Rocks, Christmas tree

The Rocks Christmas tree  is located along George Street, outside the Museum of Contemporary Art. "A Flock of Christmas Colour" is a 10 metre living evergreen coniferous cedar that features a flock of 25 native birds. The cockatoos, rosellas and rainbow lorikeets were created by Madeline Fountain using recycled street banners. The other hanging decorations are waratahs, the floral emblem of New South Wales. Merry Christmas.

Hourbourside is a dining, leisure and shopping centre on the western side of Cockle Bay at Darling Harbour. Santa Claus peeks over the glass awning and Santa faces cover lamps as part of Santa Fest. A People Mover Train makes a stop here to pick up and drop off passengers.

Coogee, The Impressionists' Seat

This view of Coogee Beach is from Dunningham Reserve, in the eastern suburb of Coogee. "The Impressionists' Seat" is a sculpture created by Eileen Slarke in 2005. It depicts famous Australian impressionist artists Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Tom Roberts, who painted coastal scenes of Sydney in the late 1800s. Conder’s Coogee Bay and Roberts’s Holiday sketch at Coogee, were painted on the same day of the 1888 Easter weekend from this headland looking over the sweep of the bay. Streeton's Sunny South Coogee Bay (2) was a painting from 1890 of the same iconic view.

Paddington, post office

The Paddington post office is located on the corner of Oxford Street and Ormond Street, in the inner city suburb of Paddington. It was designed by James Barnet and built in 1885 in the Victorian Italianate style. A large British Coat of Arms located to the centre of the Oxford Street facade parapet.

Darling Harbour, Sydney Exhibition Centre

The Sydney Exhibition Centre is located at Darling Harbour. It was officially opened in 1988 and extended for the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. The mosaic features the emblem of New South Wales and was created for the state's bicentenary in 1988. It is located between Exhibition Hall 1 and the Chinese Gardens. The flags flown here are two Australian flags, two New South Wales flags, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag. The building will soon be demolished as part of a redevelopment.

Darling Harbour, Dance of Love

"Dance of Love" is a 1.6 metre bronze sculpture created by Larissa Smagarinsky in 1987. It is a bit of a risque sculpture for such a public place, on the lawn outside the Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour.

The Chinese Garden of Friendship is located between Harbour Street and Tumbalong Park at Darling Harbour. It recreates the philosophy and harmony of a traditional Chinese garden with waterfalls, lakes, exotic plants, pavilions and hidden pathways.

Darling Harbour, Darling Park

This sunset view of the Darling Harbour footbridge and the Darling Park Monorail Station was on the last day of operation of the Sydney Monorail. The bridge takes pedestrians over the Western Distributor and links to a ramp in Market Street, near the corner of Sussex Street. The monorail track is currently being demolished with the monorail stations to follow later.

Tamarama Beach, sign

Looking out on the Pacific Ocean from the beach in the eastern suburb of Tamarama. The beach is normally packed with swimmers and surfers on such a beautiful day as this but as the sign indicates, on this day the beach was closed due to dangerous rips in the surf.

This life guard tower is located on the beach in the eastern suburb of Tamarama. This normally busy beach had no swimmers on this unusually chilly day but surfers were daring enough to surf the ocean waves in their wetsuits.

This mural has been painted along the retaining wall of the railway station, in the inner city suburb of Erskineville. It was painted by the children of Erskineville Public School under the guidance of a local artist. Part of the school can be seen above at street level.

The Domain, The Offerings of Peace

“The Offerings of Peace” is a large bronze sculpture which sits outside the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in The Domain. It is paired up with a sculpture on the other side of the main entrance called “The Offerings of War”. Both are the work of the English sculptor Gilbert Bayes and completed in 1923.

St Oswald's Anglican Church is located on the corner of Dickson Street and Dalhousie Street, in the inner west suburb of Haberfield. The original building was built in 1908 but was extended three times and it now mainly features elements of Inter-War revived Gothic architectural style.

These commercial buildings are located on the corner of King Street and Queen Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The heritage listed "J Palmer Buildings" were built in 1896 in the Victorian Filigree architectural style .

Watsons Bay, cannon

This historic cannon is located at South Head, in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay. Fortifications at South Head were completed in 1854 but weren't armed with guns until later. This 9-inch cannon, which was previously located near the Hornby Lighthouse, was one of six brought to New South Wales from the Royal Gun Factory in England in 1872. This gun emplacement is located near Camp Cove Beach and points into Sydney Harbour.

Cook and Phillip Park, Spring Cycle

This colourful display was located in the square at Cook and Phillip Park, as part of the annual Living Colour Festival. This year's theme was "Spring Cycle, featuring bicycles, white picket fence and floral displays in a number of squares and streets around the city. The Australian Museum can be seen in the distance.

Circular Quay (Theme Day: Looking Out)

Looking out across Circular Quay to Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This view was from the walkway beside the Cahill Expressway above Circular Quay railway station. It was a busy day at Circular Quay, with the cruise ship Carnival Spirit visiting and a variety of ferries arriving and departing.

Australia Square Tower

Australia Square is an office and retail complex, bounded by George Street, Bond Street, Pitt Street and Curtin Place. The Australia Square Tower was designed by Harry Seidler and was completed in 1967, becoming Australia's first true skyscraper. O Bar and Dining is a revolving restaurant and bar on the 47th floor, previously known as The Summit Restaurant and Orbit Lounge. The 48th floor houses an observation deck.

Eveleigh, Locomotive Workshop, carriage

This old train carriage is on display at the Australian Technology Park, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. The building was formerly the Locomotive Workshop, part of the Eveleigh Railway Yards which were the largest and most technologically advanced workshops in the southern hemisphere in the late 19th century. This type of single deck steel rail car operated on the Sydney Suburban system from 1925 until 1992.

Eveleigh, Locomotive Workshop

The former Eveleigh Railway Yards are part of the Australian Technology Park, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. This heritage listed Locomotive Workshop was built in 1877, consisting of 16 bays originally used for one or more trades required to repair or manufacture locomotives and their components. It now houses commercial office and exhibition space.

Eveleigh, pivot crane

This crane is on display in Innovation Plaza near the corner of Locomotive Avenue, between the Engine Shop and Locomotive Workshop at the Australian Technology Park, in the inner city suburb of Eveleigh. This was once the site of the Eveleigh Railway Yards, which were the largest and most technologically advanced workshops in the southern hemisphere in the late 19th century. This pivot crane was used from about 1925 in the now demolished Wheel Shop in the manufacture of locomotive wheels. A maintenance man is giving it a fresh coat of paint.

Haberfield, St Joan of Arc Catholic Church

St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church is located on the corner of Dalhousie Street and Deakin Avenue, in the inner west suburb of Haberfield. The original St church was built in nearby Ramsay Street in 1909. It was believed to be the first church in the world to be named after St Joan of Arc, following her beatification and canonisation. This blonde brick building was completed in 1955.
