This terrace is located in Sir Joseph Banks Park, in the eastern suburb of Botany. The mosaic titled "Sir Joseph Banks' First Journey", depicts the journey of Joseph Banks, a naturalist on the expedition of the Endeavour led by James Cook that explored the eastern coast of Australia in 1770 and landed at nearby Botany Bay.
Do we know who created this lovely mosaic, and when?
ReplyDeleteI don't know who created it but the park was created in 1988 as part of a Bicentennial project. A number of monuments were created through sponsorship provided by local companies. A plaque attributes this mosaic to Maxwell Chemicals.
DeleteMuch planning must have gone into this mosaic wheel.

Such a lovely feature! And love how it is slightly raised above ground level!
ReplyDeleteHow intricate! Thanks for joining in to Blue Monday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday, Jim.
Hi Jim- lovely mosaic mural- is its subject matter considered controversial- I was wondering whether some European settlers like Banks are considered to be ok, whereas others who oppressed the Aborigine population are now written out of history?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, Chrissy. it's true that there is some controversy regarding European settlers, particularly those who oppressed the Aboriginal population. I don't think any have ever been written out of history but some become a lesson of Australia's past mistakes. Generally, early explorers like Cook and Banks are held in high regard by the general population.
DeleteI'm a Joe Banks fan. Great mural.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful photo that you've treated us to here - and an interesting snippet of history too. Thanks for that.

ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible mural. Nice find!
ReplyDeleteI love compass rose murals; they're usually hard to depict in a picture, but you found a good angle.
