The Rocks, gas lamp

This gas street lamp is located along Harrington Street at The Rocks. Gas lighting in the streets of Sydney was inaugurated in 1841. The first electric street lights were switched on in 1904. This is one of a few remaining gas lights and it is still functioning.

  6. I don't know if gas street lamps work as well as electric street lights, or last as long. But for elegance, the Victorian lamp posts are unbeatable.

  7. Wouldn't it be great to photograph gas lamps burning at night with today's digital cameras. Fab photo opportunity. Cheers J.
