Museum of Sydney, Captain Arthur Phillip

This bronze sculpture is a bust of Captain Arthur Phillip, who commanded the First Fleet to Australia in 1788 and became the first Governor of New South Wales. It was sculpted in 1952 by Jean Hill and originally located in First Fleet Park at Circular Quay. It was moved into storage during the expansion of the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2010. After undergoing conservation work, at First Government House Place in 2014, the forecourt of the Museum of Sydney and the former site of Governor Arthur Phillip's Government House.

  3. so the RN must refer to Royal Navy; in the US, RN is registered nurse. a nice sculpture to honor the captain, but I wonder why he wasn't a commander.

    1. In the Royal Navy, Captain is a higher rank than Commander.

  4. Jim, You have taught me many things, I didn't have search for the meaning of quay this time. But I must say at first I thought that RN meant registered nurse. I'm learning. Tom The Backroads Traveller

  5. Good to learn about the first explorers to land in Australia. Didn't know about Capt. Phillips before I read your post. Use to live in New Sout Wales, NY and occasionally we had packages that went to New South Wales, AU and back. The cookies were reduced to crumbs by then.
